Philoxenia (φιλοξενία), the Greek term meaning “love for the stranger,” is one of the core virtues of the Christian faith, emphasizing hospitality and inclusivity. The Guardian title reflects the responsibility and dedication to safeguarding and fostering this ancient Christian value, ensuring that the Orthodox Church remains a place of welcome and love for all.
Our Legacy: Saint Raphael’s life and ministry serve as a guiding inspiration for the Chivalric Order of Saint Raphael of Brooklyn. A trailblazer in American Orthodoxy, he embraced a vision of the Church as a universal home that transcends cultural, social, and personal barriers, warmly welcoming all into the fullness of Orthodox faith. This Order carries forward his mission, honoring those who embody his spirit of inclusivity by recognizing individuals and organizations that go above and beyond to make the Orthodox Church a place where all feel truly valued and embraced.
Traditionally Inclusive Orthodoxy acknowledges the Orthodox Church’s historical commitment to unity and love; while expanding these principles to ensure they resonate with all people in a modern, diverse world. The Order celebrates those who foster an environment where every person—regardless of gender, ethnicity, nationality, or personal background—can connect deeply with the faith. By living out this vision, honorees advance a spirit of inclusivity that reflects Orthodoxy’s core values of compassion, hospitality, and mutual respect.
As guardians of this traditionally inclusive vision, recipients of the Order’s Grand Cross Medallion actively work to create spaces where the Orthodox faith remains accessible, relatable, and responsive to the unique journeys of all who seek it. Upholding the sacred duty of Christian Philoxenia, they extend a heartfelt welcome to all seekers, ensuring the Orthodox Church remains a spiritual home where everyone is cherished and uplifted.
